Your Breathing Physio
HELPING YOU BREATHE WITH EASE AND REGAIN CONTROL
is your breathing holding you back?
If you experience any of these symptoms,
your breathing may be playing a bigger role than you realise …
Feeling like you can’t get a deep, satisfying breath of air
Frequent yawning and/or sighing
Feeling anxious and on edge
Fatigue & sleep issues
Chest tightness, even when your heart is fine
Struggling to catch your breath
Heart palpitations
Headaches, neck or lower back tightness, muscle aches
Pins and needles or ‘tingles' in lips, finger-tips and/or toes
Dizziness, brain fog, trouble concentrating
Digestive and gut issues such as bloating & reflux

If any of this sounds familiar,
you’re in the right place.
These are all signs of a Breathing Pattern Disorder, also called Dysfunctional Breathing.
This means your breathing isn’t doing what it should for your body.
-
Breathing Pattern Disorders, often referred to as dysfunctional breathing, occurs when your breathing becomes irregular and results in a range of unpleasant symptoms.
It involves patterns of over-breathing, where the depth and rate of breath exceed your body’s needs. You may breathe too quickly, too slowly, or through your mouth instead of your nose. You might also breathe using your upper chest and neck muscles instead of your diaphragm.
Common signs of dysfunctional breathing include:
Air hunger (a feeling of not getting enough air)
Chest and throat tightness
Frequent sighing or yawning
Dizziness and lightheadedness
Fatigue and poor concentration
Anxiety and panic attacks
While occasional changes in breathing are normal, if these inefficient breathing patterns persist, they can lead to chronic symptoms of dysfunctional breathing which negatively impact your health and ability to live a life with ease and comfort in your body.
-
Dysfunctional breathing can be caused or exacerbated by numerous factors, including:
Stress and anxiety: Emotional tension often triggers shallow, rapid breathing, which may become habitual.
Respiratory conditions: Conditions such asthma, COPD, and long COVID can lead to dysfunctional breathing patterns.
Pain and tension: Chronic pain in the chest, neck, or back can lead to compensatory breathing habits.
Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially in pre-menstruation and menopause can increase breathing rates and amplify dysfunctional breathing
Substance usage: Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, or vaping can affect breathing patterns.
Post-viral conditions: Long COVID and similar post-viral syndromes can lead to autonomic disturbances, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and/or chronic fatigue, all of which can amplify dysfunctional breathing.
Nasal issues: Structural issues like a deviated septum or chronic nasal congestion may lead to mouth breathing and faulty breathing mechanics.
Trauma: Physical or emotional trauma can disrupt normal breathing patterns.
Recognising and addressing these factors with a respiratory (breathing) physiotherapist is key to improving your breathing and symptoms.
-
Respiratory (breathing) physiotherapists provide an evidence-informed, comprehensive approach to managing dysfunctional breathing. With specialised training and experience, they work collaboratively you and other healthcare providers, such as your general practitioners and specialists, to help your improve your breathing and symptoms.
A respiratory physiotherapist can assist by:
Identifying poor breathing: Conducting thorough assessments to evaluate breathing patterns and pinpoint contributing factors.
Breathing retraining: Teaching evidence-based breathing re-training to help you restore efficient breathing.
Stress management: Introducing calming breathing techniques and relaxation to regulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety.
Posture and movement optimisation: Enhancing posture and core strength to support respiratory efficiency.
Gradual activity exposure: Developing personalised strategies to rebuild confidence in performing activities again without flare ups and fear of symptoms.
Diaphragm strengthening: Implementing inspiratory muscle training (IMT) to improve the strength of your breathing muscles (diaphragm)

“Before I started working with Abby on my breathing, I was really struggling with yawning and feeling like I couldn’t take a satisfactory breath… It was frustrating and left me feeling tense and uneasy throughout the day. Since receiving support from Abby, I’ve experienced such positive changes. My breathing feels much more natural and controlled, and I no longer feel the constant need to yawn. I feel calmer, more at ease, and I’ve noticed improvements in my overall sense of well-being. Abby’s guidance has been invaluable, and I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made.”

“So many people don’t realise their symptoms are even related to dysfunctional breathing, let alone that there is help & support available.

“Before I started working with Abby, I was dealing with chronic migraine and titrating off medication. A lot of neck tension, yawning, short breath, light headedness and weak diaphragm.
Now, I have got barely any neck pain or tension, I got off the medication without any migraines, I have strengthened my diaphragm and notice a huge change in breath length, I feel calmer overall and can dance easier since learning how to breath into my lower lungs and still engage my abdominals. And possibly many more things I can’t recall right now!”

“I reached out to Abby, as I was having anxiety about day to day tasks and I felt like the physical symptoms of anxiety were negatively impacting me and my thoughts. I had a fear of fainting when I felt out of control of my physical symptoms. I had tried my best to manage my anxiety but nothing seemed to improve it. I went to see a counsellor and practised mindfulness techniques but I saw improvements when I listened to Abby and took time to address my dysfunctional breathing. Having the physical symptoms of anxiety under control helped with my thinking.”

“Before working with Abby, I was constantly dealing with headaches, neck tension, and debilitating back pain that would seize up and leave me unable to work for days. I also struggled with short, shallow breaths — I was a massive chest breather. Now, I feel incredible. The information and techniques Abby has provided are truly life-changing. I understand my body so much better and can manage and resolve back pain episodes quickly. Abby has given me the tools and knowledge I needed to live a relatively pain-free life. My breathing has completely transformed — I’m far more aware of it and can stop, reconnect, and reset when I feel myself slipping back into old patterns. I’m so grateful for this change! Thanks again Abby.”

Before seeing Abby, I had a lot of pain daily without having any explanation or reason for why it was happening. After seeing multiple doctors and even a trip to the ER I was finally referred to Abby. Since working with Abby my pain has significantly decreased. It no longer impacts my quality of life and I can get on with doing what I love without any pain. Abby has given me the tools and strategies to prevent my pain and deal with it when it does show up. Seeing Abby has also reduced symptoms that I didn't even know was related to my pain (chest tightness, light-headedness, tingling hands, yawning ALL the time!).
Former client
“I would absolutely recommend Abby to anyone. She is incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and gentle in her approach, and she explains things in a way that is so easy to understand. Working with Abby has been truly life-changing for me. If you’re willing to put in the work, I have no doubt it will be life-changing for you too.”
